Putting People First: Why Local Leadership Matters Now More Than Ever

If we’re not here to help the most vulnerable in Northumberland, then what are we involved in politics for?
Child poverty, homelessness, and unemployment are not abstract issues they are daily realities for too many families in our communities. For far too long, these challenges have been ignored or sidelined by both a Conservative Council and a Conservative Government. Now that we’ve taken the first important step in removing one of those obstacles, we have a real opportunity to show people what meaningful change looks like.
And the time to act is now.
I didn’t get into politics for the headlines or the photo ops despite having to do all that too. I got involved after years of running support services on the ground, face to face with the people who needed help the most. Today, I’m proud to serve as a local councillor and to work in the NHS, where I continue that same mission: improving lives, building stronger communities, and helping people lead healthier, more secure lives. Not to mention my dedication for my charitable work that I’ve given 18years of my life to.
This work isn’t separate it’s all connected. Whether it’s helping a family in crisis access housing or supporting a young person with mental health needs, it all comes down to building a system that puts people first. That’s the message we stand for locally in the Labour Party. And that’s the message we need to amplify nationally.
Because let’s be clear: the gains we’ve made are at risk of being drowned out by those who want to divide and distract. Parties like Reform thrive on anxiety and disillusionment. They promise quick fixes and scapegoats but never real solutions. Their politics is about noise, not progress.
Our response must be different. It must be bold. It must be honest. And it must never lose sight of the people we serve.
I believe we need to be ambitious for every person in our community. No one should be left behind whether they’re struggling with the cost of living, trying to access care, or seeking a decent job and a fair wage. That’s why I stood for local leadership, and it’s why I continue to work hard both in the NHS and in our charitable community services.
We can’t just talk about change we have to deliver it in ways people can see, feel, and understand in their everyday lives.
So let’s get to work. Let’s show people we care. Let’s rebuild trust through action. Together, we can shape a future that truly puts people first.
