Northumberland Labour welcomes funding boost to secure completion of the Northumberland Line

Northumberland Labour has today welcomed the announcement of an additional £27.9 million of funding for the Northumberland Line – a vital investment that will ensure the project is completed in full and on schedule.

The package includes £17 million from the Labour Government and £10.9 million from North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, bridging the existing funding gap and guaranteeing the delivery of this transformational project.

Since opening, the line has already carried over 500,000 passengers, far exceeding initial expectations. This success underlines the importance of the service for communities across Northumberland and the wider region.

Northumberland Labour Leader Scott Dickinson said:

“This is fantastic news for Northumberland. The Northumberland Line is already proving a huge success, and this extra investment means the project will be completed for the benefit of local people and businesses. It shows what can be achieved when the Council, past and present administrations, Government and Mayor work together in genuine partnership to deliver for our communities.”

The Northumberland Line, which reconnects communities to jobs, education, and leisure opportunities, is a central part of Labour’s commitment to improving public transport and investing in the North East’s future.
