Scott Dickinson MBE Leader Northumberland Labour has welcomed today’s announcement that the North East of England will become home to a new AI Growth Zone, unlocking over 5,000 new jobs and attracting up to £30 billion in private investment.
The partnership, struck between the UK and US governments, cements the region’s role as a global leader in AI innovation and advanced technology, building on the North East’s strengths in renewable energy, world-class universities, and cutting-edge industries including robotics, space, and advanced manufacturing.
One of the most significant investments to date has already been confirmed, with Blackstone committing £10 billion to the Blyth site, with the Growth Zone designation opening the door to a further £20 billion in private investment.
Speaking on the announcement, Scott Dickinson MBE said:
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for people here in Northumberland and across the wider North East. The creation of an AI Growth Zone will mean thousands of good-quality jobs for local residents, opportunities for young people to train in future-facing careers, and real investment in the communities we serve. Northumberland has the talent, the energy, and the ambition to make this work – and this investment ensures that our region will be at the forefront of technological development for decades to come. Crucially, this is about more than just jobs in tech. AI will help transform our public services, from healthcare to education, bringing lasting benefits to people’s everyday lives.
It is fantastic to see this Government backing, which has enabled this further investment because of the 'Site of National Importance' status which the Labour Government gave to the Cambois site.”
The announcement also highlights the region’s work to upskill local people in AI and related fields, ensuring that residents have access to the training and support needed to secure long-term careers in the sector.
The AI Growth Zone will not only position the North East as a hub of global innovation but will also deliver tangible benefits for families and communities in Northumberland, with growth opportunities spreading across the wider economy.
