My thoughts on the benefit reforms

Here in the North East, too many people are already feeling the sharp edge of a cost-of-living crisis. From families struggling to make ends meet, to disabled people, carers, and those living with long-term illness our communities include people who rely on the social safety net simply to survive with dignity.
I understand that the welfare system must work fairly and effectively. Where reform helps people who are able to work to move into good, secure jobs with real support, not punishment I support that. Most people want the opportunity to contribute, if they’re able, we must support and enable that.
But we cannot and must not allow reform to become a smokescreen for something else or a way to push people off support they genuinely need. A compassionate society doesn’t turn its back on those who are struggling the most.
Any change to our welfare system must start from one simple question: Are we protecting those who truly need us?
