🏠 Local People Deserve Better from Our Housing System

Week in, week out, I’m hearing from residents who are facing eviction through no fault of their own.

Section 21 notices, landlords selling up, or sudden changes in circumstances all leaving decent people desperate for somewhere to live.

But when they turn to the Homefinder system, it’s clear that something is fundamentally broken.

There’s no real recognition of local connection no weight given to the fact that someone has lived in our villages all their lives, works locally and doesn’t drive, or has family and support networks right here in the community.

Instead, people are being forced to move miles away.

They’re losing their jobs, their support systems, and the very roots that hold our communities together. And it’s simply not right.

Our social housing system should protect communities, not break them apart.

We urgently need a local allocation policy that puts local people first those who live here, work here, and contribute every single day to what makes Druridge Bay and wider Northumberland such special places to live.

This isn’t about excluding anyone it’s about fairness, common sense, and protecting the fabric of our local communities.

I’m sick of seeing good people pushed to the edge because the system doesn’t value their local ties. It’s time to fix it. 💪
