🏠 Building Homes for All – Why Northumberland Needs Council Houses & Bungalows

Northumberland’s beauty draws people from across the country, but behind the scenery a crisis is unfolding.

Holiday lets and second homes are driving prices sky-high. Young people can’t afford to live where they grew up, and older residents can’t find suitable homes to downsize into. The result? Villages that are vibrant in summer turn into winter ghost towns.

We need action. Northumberland County Council must invest in building modern, affordable, year-round homes including council houses for families and bungalows for older residents.

This matters because:

  • Young people can put down roots instead of moving away.

  • Older residents can remain in the communities they’ve loved all their lives.

  • Schools keep pupils, shops keep customers, and services like buses and GP surgeries stay viable.

  • Local money stays in local pockets, not in the hands of absentee landlords.

This isn’t just about housing it’s about protecting the heart of our communities. When people of all ages can afford to live here, we keep the lights on all year round.

Northumberland County Council: it’s time to build for locals, not just for holidays.
